Schaumburg tried to make Summit Drive seem like Bourbon Street during Monday's Septemberfest parade, themed "Mardi Gras -- Schaumburg Style."

Wearing feathered masks and throwing beaded necklaces to the crowd, parade entrants marched up the street to the sounds of Dixieland jazz.

The parade featured more than 80 floats and marching units, many of them creatively incorporating this year's theme.

The parade stepped off with the traditional police and fire motorcade leading the way. A group of local veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan were honored as parade marshals. And Miss Septemberfest's court made its traditional appearance atop the Rotary Club of Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates' float.

The only hiccup seemed to be when the Rotary Club's lead car, a white 1950s Pontiac Thunderbird convertible, stalled in front of the reviewing stand at Collins Elementary School. With 70-plus more parade units waiting behind, a number spectators sprang into action and gave the car the push it needed to keep the procession moving that hot and sunny morning.

The Crystal Lake-based Sinful Saints Dixieland Band won an award for best antique auto. The band rode atop a restored 1950s-era Warrenville Fire Protection District engine, playing "When the Saints Come Marching In."

Schaumburg High School took the best high school marching band award with a spirited rendition of "Vehicle," by The Ides of March.

Carolyn Grurnek won in the specialty vehicle category for the hand-crafted fire truck and train replicas that rode through the parade.

Chuck-A-Roo took home the professional clown award after the clown rock band performed, "Play That Funky Music, White Boy" on a truck bed.

The Ukrainian American Veterans Post 32 won best color guard, which in addition to flag bearers included a small motorcade of military vehicles.

The award for best non-musical marching went to Medieval Times for its procession of knights and minstrels riding horseback.

In keeping with the Mardi Gras theme, Cub Scout Pack 195 won best amateur float with a highly decorated scene that featured a life-sized mannequin of Spider Man -- wearing beads -- standing at the corner of Bourbon and Canal streets.

Jewel won best commercial/professional float for its costumed bread loafs and hot dogs that greeted spectators as store employees passed out candy.

The Pipes Drums Emerald Society won best adult marching band for its combination of bagpipe and percussion music.
